Updated: Jul 19, 2023

Leading Singapore clean energy company Sunseap Group has set up a green mobility business called Charge+, with plans to install 10,000 charging points across the island within this decade, a move it hopes will be a game-changer in catalysing EV adoption in Singapore.

Leading Singapore clean energy company Sunseap Group has set up a green mobility business called Charge+, with plans to install 10,000 charging points across the island within this decade, a move it hopes will be a game-changer in catalysing EV adoption in Singapore.

The company said its investment will support Singapore’s goal of phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles for 100% clean energy vehicles by 2040.

Charge+ will focus on three market segments, namely residential, commercial and industrial, and fleets. It aims to install charging points in public housing estates and private developments, particularly condominiums, as well as in commercial and industrial buildings, to serve the workplace market. Charge+ will also serve companies operating electric vehicle fleets.

Mr Goh Chee Kiong, CEO of Charge+, said: “The vision of Charge+ is to address the pain points faced by dense cities such as Singapore and become a game-changer for the EV sector. As a leading EV charging operator in Singapore, Charge+ aims to make the charging experience convenient, pleasant and affordable for residents and businesses.”

To that end, Charge+ will leverage its differentiated advantages to address the challenges faced by the EV sector. In particular, it is now developing its own proprietary, ultra-slim charger which is specifically designed for plug and play in all existing carparks. More information on its design can be found in Annex A.

As many carparks in Singapore have limited localised power supply, Charge+ will apply its smart charging solution to allow for more chargers to be installed, thereby serving more EV drivers. This solution forms part of the secure cloud-based Management System to remotely control and monitor all uthe EV chargers nationwide. Charge+ will also provide EV drivers with a seamless mobile app experience that allows for ease of locating available chargers, start a charging session and payment.

In conjunction with this launch, Charge+ said Axxel Marketing, Ebenezer Group and StorHub, have signed up as its first set of clients. More information on the companies can be found in Annex B.

Using Singapore as the launch market, Charge+ intends to apply its integrated solutions to serve similarly dense cities in Southeast Asia and beyond. The company will structure its solutions on a platform-as-a-service model so as to accelerate our outreach to partners in the region.

Charge+ will leverage the existing deep technical and commercial prowess of Sunseap and at the same time, help Sunseap achieve diversification of its clean energy business portfolio. Charge+ will also ride on the vast network of Sunseap which has so far amassed a portfolio of solar projects across over 4,000 buildings in Singapore.

Mr Frank Phuan, CEO of Sunseap, said: “Charge+ will build on Sunseap’s vision of making clean energy affordable for everyone. Its roll-out plan, the largest to-date for Singapore’s EV sector, will help spur the adoption of electric vehicles in the country. Such smart city technology is the way forward if we are to make our city a greener and healthier place."

Mr Ong Tze Boon, Chairman of Charge+, added: “Charge+’s proprietary ultra-slim changer,

designed by Singapore for the Singapore market, will facilitate EV adoption across many

existing carparks. We are also excited to build the next-generation smart software and

platform business model to catalyse the markets beyond Singapore.”

About Sunseap Group

Sunseap Group is the leading solar energy system developer, owner and operator in

Singapore, with over 300 MegaWatt-peak (MWp) of solar energy projects contracted, of

which 168 MWp have been completed on more than 1,500 buildings in Singapore including public housing estates, as well as commercial and industrial buildings. It operates through five key units: Sunseap Leasing, Sunseap International, Sunseap Energy, Sunseap Engineering and Sunseap Solutions.

Sunseap Leasing is the first and largest solar leasing company in Singapore. Sunseap

International targets markets in the Southeast Asian and Pacific regions. These include a 168 MWp solar farm in Vietnam, a 140 MWp solar farm in India, and a 10 MWp solar farm in Cambodia. Sunseap Energy provides renewable energy solutions utilising off-site arrangements by drawing on solar systems within the Group’s portfolio of distributed

generation assets. A notable client of Sunseap Energy is Apple, which signed an agreement with Sunseap to procure 100% of its local energy requirements from renewable sources. Sunseap Energy is also providing Microsoft 100% of the renewable energy produced from 60 MW of rooftop solar projects in Singapore. Sunseap Engineering provides engineering, procurement and construction as well as operation and maintenance services for PV projects. Sunseap Solutions focuses on energy efficiency solutions by providing services such as energy audits, lighting retrofitting and green roof systems.

Annex A

Charge+ is now developing a proprietary ultra-slim Alternating Current (AC) charger with dual charging points at 7.4kW power rating each. Designed to be compact, this charger is slated to be the world’s slimmest commercial EV charger.

Annex B

Axxel Marketing is a leading promotional products and marketing services supplier

headquartered in Singapore serving more than 3,000 clients in the region. To reduce

emissions in its operations, Axxel is introducing a series of electrification initiatives. Axxel will partner Charge+ to install 10 charging points, including 2 direct current (DC) fast charging points, in Axxel Innovation Centre located at Genting Lane. The chargers will support Axxel’s “zero emission” target for its last-mile delivery operations through its affiliate last-mile company, Okwhere. To provide a sustainable and affordable delivery service, Okwhere will introduce electric vans into their fleet starting from 2Q2021 with Axxel Innovation Centre as home base. This builds on the earlier solar project with Sunseap in which a 194 kWpeak solar system was installed on Axxel’s rooftop.

Ebenezer Group is a diversified local engineering group providing non-destructive testing, steel fabrication, CNC machining, marine engineering, solar installation and event

infrastructure services. The company is taking on an EV fleet comprising electric passenger cars and electric vans, for which Charge+ will provide 8 charging points at its Upper Jurong premises in Singapore to serve their needs.

StorHub was the first to introduce the self storage concept to Singapore in 2003 and is now the largest self storage operator in the country with 12 conveniently located facilities. In support of StorHub’s environmental sustainability focus, StorHub has partnered Charge+ to install charging points at its premises. The partnership will start with 8 charging points at its Toa Payoh facility which can conveniently serve prospective EV drivers living in neighbouring housing blocks and condominiums in the Toa Payoh catchment. This project builds on the earlier partnership where Sunseap provided energy efficiency and green roof solutions for StorHub.
